Sonic Drilling

Looking for sonic drilling services?

Matrix Drilling can help on your next project where unconsolidated formations are problematic for conventional drilling techniques. Sonic drilling utilises high-frequency, resonant energy to advance tooling into the ground and can obtain relatively undisturbed samples with a down hole core barrel. Minimal amounts of fluids are required in unconsolidated ground conditions and the drilling technique keeps the hole stabilised in formations that typically collapse such as gravels, sands, clays, cobbles and boulders. Matrix Drilling has the equipment and experience to get the job done safely, efficiently, on time, and on budget.

What is sonic drilling?

Sonic drilling involves the use of high-frequency, resonant energy generated inside a Sonic drill head to advance a core barrel or casing into subsurface formations.

When drilling, the energy is transferred down the drill string to the face at multiple sonic frequencies, whilst rotating the drill string evenly.

This results in the maximum amount of energy being delivered to the face.

Sonic Drilling method

The following procedure is followed for sonic drilling:

STEP 1: CORE BARREL ADVANCEMENT
STEP 2: CASING OVERRIDE
STEP 3: CORE RETRIEVAL
STEP 4: REPEAT CORE BARREL ADVANCEMENT
