Non Destructive Digging

Non Destructive Digging Specialists

Drilling through buried utilities is dangerous and expensive. Locating all underground utilities and other subsurface structures is not always possible as some utilities are non-conductive or masked by fill material in the surrounding soil.

Matrix Drilling operates a fleet of vacuum excavation (also known as Non Destructive Digging – NDD) trucks and trailers to pre-clear drilling locations prior to intrusive works.

We can pre-clear drilling locations to as deep as three metres below ground depending on the subsurface conditions. We use both truck and trailer-mounted vacuum excavation units depending on the size of the job and whether the site has tight access or not. In addition to pre-clearing drill locations, we can also undertake trenching and set shallow wells.

What is NDD?

NDD stands for Non Destructive Digging. It is widely known as the safest method of clearing boreholes or potholing to visually locate underground utilities. It uses a high pressure water lance and vacuum technology to suck the earth out of the ground in a small, dedicated area. It is a cost-effective way of digging that has no impact to surrounding areas and alleviates WH&S issues with hand tools.
